What is a measurement or floorplan service?

Home measurement services are just what they sound like: Based on what you want, an appraiser will measure the home's dimensions and area, then draw a basic or highly detailed layout. The appraiser's report and floorplan is a form that can be used to prove the accurate Gross Living Area (GLA), the sum of all livable space, of your home. These services are helpful and often necessary when challenging property taxes or selling a property.

How does a home measurement or floorplan service work?

During a floorplan service, a certified appraiser measures your home or property with a measuring tool — generally a tape or laser measuring device. As they tour the property, they notate the layout of the rooms and other features, like stairs, patios, and fireplaces. They may sketch out the property. Then, the appraiser creates a report and a more detailed sketch showing the total square footage and the general layout of the house.
